Google Ads to require Financial Services Verification in the US and Canada from early 2027
On October 20, 2026 Google announced it will bring its Financial Services Verification program to the United States and Canada, with a planned rollout in early 2027. On top of standard advertiser identity verification, advertisers running certain financial services ads will have to show they are authorized by relevant regulators or recognized registries before those ads can run. In the US, Google says it is working with the American Bankers Association to use its registry to verify authorized banks; in Canada it is engaging with the Canadian Bankers Association. The program already applies in 42 countries, including the UK since 2021 and the European Union. Google says it will publish country-specific information (accepted registries, required credentials, onboarding steps) ahead of the rollout and will notify advertisers if and when they need to complete verification before enforcement begins.
Impact
Banks, lenders, card issuers, fintechs and other financial advertisers targeting the US or Canada will face an extra pre-approval step that can block ads from serving if credentials are missing or do not match a recognized registry. Agencies managing financial clients in these markets should expect onboarding work and potential delivery interruptions around the enforcement date, as already seen in the UK and EU rollouts. The change also raises the barrier for impersonators and unlicensed operators, which can reduce competition from scam advertisers in auctions.
Recommendations
- List every client account running financial services ads that target the US or Canada and identify the legal entity and regulator or registry that authorizes each one
- Make sure the advertiser identity verification name matches the licensed entity exactly to avoid mismatches later
- Watch for Google's country-specific requirements and verification notifications and plan the paperwork before the early 2027 enforcement date
- Build buffer into early 2027 media plans for financial clients in case verification delays ad delivery
